“What’s a lab-grown diamond?” It’s a question we here at Diamonds on Wabash hear all the time. But have no fear, if anyone can make the topic diamond-clear, it’s us.

Despite what you might have heard, lab-grown diamonds aren’t “fake” diamonds. They aren’t cubic zirconium, quartz crystal, moissanite, or any other substitute for diamonds that have historically been available. They’re actually chemically identical to diamonds that are mined from the Earth!

      WHAT EXACTLY ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS?
Diamonds are, as you might know, a form of carbon (like pencil lead, coal, and even burned toast!) that happens to be arranged in a miraculous way that makes them nearly indestructible, flawless, and filled with inner fire. When raw carbon happens to be exposed to the extreme heat of the Earth and the massive pressure from being thousands of feet underground, it can sometimes be reformed into what we know as diamonds.

For thousands of years, people weren’t able to achieve the heat and pressure necessary to turn boring, everyday carbon into diamonds, but thanks to modern technology, all that’s changed. Scientists are now capable of producing diamonds in laboratory crucibles. All this process takes is high voltage electricity for the heat and hydraulic anvils capable of withstanding the tremendous pressure they’re capable of making.

When the process is done, voila: There’s a new rough diamond ready to be cut into any beautiful shape and set into your ring or wedding band.

BENEFITS OF BUYING A LAB-GROWN DIAMOND
What are the benefits of this process? First, it’s a lot easier on your bank account. Lab-grown diamonds cost, on average, about 30 percent less than natural diamonds of when compared carat-for-carat. That means you can get that big sparkly rock—with all the sparkle included—for your dream engagement ring without having to spend an arm and a leg to get it.

Additionally, lab-grown diamonds are a lot more Earth-friendly than mined natural diamonds. Think about it this way: Mining requires gas for hundreds and hundreds of mining vehicles. Electricity for the mines’ machines, like crushers and separators. Vehicles to take the miners to and from the mines. In comparison, a lab-grown diamond only requires a little bit of raw carbon and enough electricity to power the forge and melt the carbon. In ecological terms, it’s the difference between night and day.
